Meet STA Coaches and Staff

Jack Roach - Director of Tennis

Jack comes to the Shakopee Tennis Association from Interlachen Country Club in Edina, where he was the Director of Tennis for 25 years. Jack's career highlights include:

  • Director of Tennis, Interlachen Country Club
  • Head Coach, University of Minnesota Women's Tennis Team, 4 years
  • Head Coach Minneapolis Edison High School
  • Head Coach Roseville Kellogg High School
  • Taught tennis at Northwest Racquet Club for over 20 years
  • Head Tennis Professional at Minnekahda Country Club for 4 years.

Jack is a USPTA Certified Professional, graduated from Macalester College on a tennis scholarship and received his Masters in Education from St. Cloud State. Jack has served as a past president of both the Northern Section of the USTA and the USPTA and is member of the Minnesota Tennis Hall of Fame.

Jenny Arnfelt - Assistant Director of Tennis

  • I am originally from Arden Hills, MN, where I went to Mounds View High School. At Mounds View, I played tennis all four years and loved it!
  • I graduated in 2004 and attended Gustavus Adolphus College in the fall of 2004. At Gustavus, I played tennis all four years and had some amazing experiences there!
  • I graduated from Gustavus in the spring of 2008 where I majored in Elementary Education. I am currently teaching 2nd grade in St. Anthony. I love teaching kids both in the classroom and on the tennis court.
  • I have taught tennis for my summer job for 9 years now at the following places: Shakopee!!!, Shoreview Parks and Recreation, Lifetime Fitness - Fridley, and Interlachen Country Club.

Susan Allen - Tennis Professional

Playing Experience

  • I played for Apollo high school.  I participated  in the State tournament as an Individual for four years and with our team twice. 
  • In college, I attended Gustavus Adolphus College where I played #2 as a freshman.  We advanced to the NCAA tournament as a team.  I transferred to St. Cloud State University and played for three years.  I was the first player to make it to the NCAA Division 2 tournament in SCSU's history.
  • I've enjoyed playing on numerous USTA teams.  I take credit for Jackson's success by knowing I played "triples" with him on the US Open courts before he was born!
  • Some of my favorite memories include playing in the Pine Tree tournament that benefits Children's Cancer.

Coaching experience

  • Currently Head Coach for Girls Varsity Tennis team in Shakopee
  • Employed by Lifetime Eden Prairie as a Tennis Professional.  I have taught for 18 years at the Health Clubs
  • Traveled with top ranked Sectional players through Europe for a summer.
  • Taught at Interlachen Country Club for four years with Jack Roach.

Matt Makis - Coach

  • This is my sixth summer coaching in the Shakopee summer tennis program
  • I was recently elected Captain/President of the NDSU Club Tennis Team
  • I received my PTR Certification inMArch 2011
  • I attended Holy Family Catholic High School
  • I just finished my Sophomore year at North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND majoring in Sports and Recreation Management
  • I have been playing tennis in the Shakopee tennis program since I was 11
  • I have played varsity tennis for Holy Family for four years and I played varsity tennis for Shakopee in eighth grade.
  • I currently play on NDSU's club team and we have made it to tennis on campus nationals the past two years.
  • I was a co captain for the Holy Family Tennis Team
  • In 2009, Holy Family placed 3rd in the State meet. In 2008 my partner Tim Menden and I made it to state competition in doubles.
  • I was selected All Conference in my junior year and All Conference Honorable Mention as a sophomore

Kayla Worm - Coach

  • I am so excited to be back for my fourth summer teaching youth tennis lessons!
  • I will be a Sophomore at the University of Wisconsin – Stout this coming fall where I am studying Retail Merchandising/Management.
  • I have been involved in the Shakopee Summer Tennis Program since I was eight years old!
  • I played on the Shakopee Varsity tennis team for five years.
  • I was honored with the awards of: All-Conference (9th, 11th, 12th), All-Conference Honorable Mention (10th), MVP, and Most-Dedicated.
  • I was voted by my teammates to be a team captain as a Junior and Senior.
  • I am a recipient of the USTA Serves scholarship. 
  • I am looking forward to a fun summer filled with tennis!

 

Amy Forbes - Coach

  • This is my third summer coaching youth lessons (with a year off for an internship in D.C.) and I am looking forward to helping coach one of the 12U teams!
  • I graduated from Holy Family in the spring of 2009 and went on to attend Wake Forest University on an Army ROTC scholarship. I am currently entering my junior year (English Major, Photography, Journalism & History Minors) and spent my past semester abroad in Venice, Italy.
  • I have been with the Shakopee Tennis Program for 16 years now (I knew Steve before he could shave!)
  • I was a Captain at Holy Family and played primarily doubles, where my partner and I went undefeated in our conference in 2007 and I received All Conference Honorable mention. I now play for Wake Forest's club team (doubles again!), play rugby, and run the Archery Club. Not to mention endless hours dedicated to ROTC, hooah!
  • I like to spend my summers working hard, reading, taking advantage of MN's wonderful lakes, and going up north to the cabin :)
  • I have three younger brothers (all play tennis) and a dog named Buddy who is known as "Buddy the Tennis Court Dog". You can usually spot him trailing after me throughout the summer on and off the courts!

David Forbes - Coach

  • I have been with the Shakopee Tennis Association for around 13 years now.
  • Assistiant coach of the 10 and under quickstart team.
  • I have been playing since I was 4 years old.
  • Nominated Captain for the Holy Family Boys Tennis Team this spring (2012)
  • I also restring tennis racquets in my free time. Great hobby.
  • Currently a Senior at Holy Family Catholic High School. (Graduate in May of 2012)
  • I will be attending University of Wisconsin - Superior in the fall of 2012.
  • Played in the Minnesota State High School Class A tennis tournament as a freshman. Took 3rd place as a team. (2008)

Darren Iverson - Coach

Steve Luukkonen - Assistant Director of Tennis (on leave)

  • Been with Shakopee Tennis since I was 6 (one of the original 8 kids!)
  • Tennis Instructor at Arrowhead Tennis in Duluth for 3 years
  • I graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth (Go Bulldogs!) with a degree in Physical Education!!
  • I am currently a Phy ed. teacher at the Woodstock School in Mussoorie, India
  • In addition to coaching tennis, I was the assistant coach for La Crosse for Shakopee's Boys Inaugural Club La Crosse Team!
  • I have have run 7 marathons (3 Grandma's, 1 Twin Cities, 1 Minneapolis, the Paavo Nurmi in Finland and the New Delhi marathon) and a bunch of 5k's!!:) My overall goal is to become a member of the 50/50 club, 50 marathons in 50 states!! With Boston being the final one! Or not, doesn't matter!!
